Word comes from an alteration, in astronomer's Mohammed ibn Musa al-khowarizmi book, named Al-jabr w'almuqabala (around 825a.C.) There is also a misunderstanding that Algebra was invented by Arabs. That's not true. Book's Αριθμητικά (means arithmetics in Greek) by Diofantos contribution in Algebra was analogous to Elements of Euclides in Geometry. The Arabs Mathematicians, taking the wheel from Greeks, played a decisive role in the later progress of Algebra and generally in the unity called Mathematics. At theirs many ways contribution should be noticed the large amount of translations that they did from Greek, which is the reason than many of them survived, even though the actual prototypes are missing.
