easy finding square numbers ending in 5

We will see a method that allows us to find in an easy way the squares of numbers ending in 5, without ofcourse any calculator usage. What is the square of 5 ?   $5^2=5*5=25$ ...that was easy What is the square of 15 ? ... This is a bit more difficult. We don't want to do the multiplication, so let's try something different. We are seaking for the outcome of $15*15$ FACT : the number that we are looking for ends in 25. Take the first digit of the number that you have to multiply (the 1 in our example) and multiply it with is's next integer . getting: $1*2=2$. In what we find we write at the very end the 25, so we come up with 225 (i can imagine that you have already done it with the calculator) Same logic we follow to find the outcome of  $25^2$ $2*3=6$, put at the end the 25 and you get the number 625. The squares of  35,45,55,65,75,85,95 can be found with the same way and you can do it for practice. The method is almost the same for a 3-d...

Αν ο...

visual proof on simple algebraic identity

What we want to prove is the algebraic identity: $ \displaystyle (a+b)^2=a^2 + 2ab + b^2$ of course we can do some math and prove it, but we don't want that. Are we? So only easy maths accepted, ok here it is : well... that probably didn't make many sense! Lets take it one step at a time. We begin with just a line: this line has a total length of a+b (we don't really care how much actually a and b are) now put a same line in 90 degrees angle next to it let's do that two more times : and  again  a square is formed!  Next, we draw two more lines and we are done put some color into it... As we see, four areas were created. Areas 1 and 2 are squares, 3 and 4 are parallelograms. Can you see 3 and 4 have the same dimensions? If so, you can tell that they are equal. For squares and rectangles , we can find their area by multiplying their dimensions  (just if someone doesn't remember that!) We are fina...

Πόσο μεγάλο είναι το άπειρο;

Origin of the word Algebra

(πατήστε εδώ για την ελληνική έκδοση του άρθρου) Some people, even those who are familiar with the subject, may believe that the word Albegra is Greek. This is not true. Word comes from an alteration, in astronomer's Mohammed ibn Musa al-khowarizmi book, named Al-jabr w'almuqabala (around 825a.C.) There is also a misunderstanding that Algebra was invented by Arabs. That's not true. Book's Αριθμητικά (means arithmetics in Greek) by Diofantos contribution in Algebra was analogous to Elements of Euclides in Geometry. The Arabs Mathematicians, taking the wheel from Greeks, played a decisive role in the later progress of Algebra and generally in the unity called Mathematics. At theirs many ways contribution should be noticed the large amount of translations that they did from Greek, which is the reason than many of them survived, even though the actual prototypes are missing. What today we call western civilization, is a road which has many turns and stops in it...

(click here for the English article ) Αρκετοί άνθρωποι, ακόμα και σχετικοί ως προς το αντικείμενο, νομίζουν ότι η λέξη Άλγεβρα είναι ελληνική, κάτι το οποίο είναι ανακριβές.

visual proof of the pythagorean theorem

για την ελληνική έκδοση του άρθρου πατήστε εδώ The pythagorean theorem, also known as the hecatomb theorem or even at the Byzantium era, the skadra rule (skadra means square in Greek). In any right-angled triangle, the square whose side is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares whose sides are the two legs (the two sides that meet at a right angle) Let's begin with a right angle square (side α is the hypotenuse) What does the theorem states? The square   of the hypotenuse... so we will create a square whose side is equal to the hypotenuse. We make a square with side length β+γ. We got four same triangles, we rotated them in a proper way and so in the inner  a new square appears. This square has side length equal to the hypotenuse. Nice, at this point let's make our shape a bit more colorful. At this step, nothing has changed.Isn't that right? Well, now we will fold the triangles inside...
